# METADATA Data Description:
#
# ABSTRACT:
# The report authors maintained notes detailing the process that
# was used to do the analysis for this report. The pertinent
# notes were included in the appendix of the report.
# Some details that did not warrant publication reside
# in these notes. These notes are being archived in the
# event that they might be of use to future water-use
# efforts aimed at stream-valley aquifers.

PENNSYLVANIA DOCUMENTATION
Last edited: December 22, 2005

For the 2000 compilation the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PADEP) provided data on public water systems. If the population served data was available but the water use data was missing, estimated of water use were made using a coefficient of 60 gallons per captia (gpc). For small counties, some data was utilized from the 1995 water use compilation. The PADEP, the United States Environmental Protection Agency, the Delaware River Basin Commission, and the Susquehanna River Basin Commission provided data about self-supplied industrial water users. The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture provided irrigation data. The PADEP had some golf course irrigation data that is classified as a commercial activity in Pennsylvania.

In 2000 total water ground-water withdrawals in Pennsylvania was approximately 666 Mgal/d. Ground-water withdrawals in the categories of public supply, self-supplied industrial, and irrigation are 368 Mgal/d, 55 per cent of total ground-water withdrawals. For the 2000 compilation there were no withdrawals attributed to alluvial aquifers. Withdrawals from the Other aquifer category totaled 109 Mgal/d representing 30 per cent of ground water withdrawals from the three categories. Public supply was the source of most of the withdrawals attributed to the Other aquifer (81 Mgal/d); followed by self-supplied industrial (28.2 Mgal/d) and the irrigation (0.1 Mgal/d).

Stream-valley aquifer withdrawals were disaggregated from withdrawals assigned to the Other aquifer and the Pennsylvanian aquifers. These two categories were identified as containing wells screened in unconsolidated deposits that potentially could be assigned to stream-valley aquifers. Wells from the two categories were mapped to identify those that were located within the areal extent of stream-valley aquifers and that were south of the extent of continental glaciation. Well construction information, including aquifer and depth, was then used to confirm that the well meet the criteria for consideration as a source for stream-valley aquifer withdrawals.

Stream valley-aquifer disaggregation reduced total withdrawals from the Other aquifer by 42.1 Mgal/d. The remaining total withdrawals of 67.2 Mgal/d are attributed to small or unnamed aquifers. Total withdrawals from Pennsylvanian aquifers were reduced by 28.1 Mgal/d as a result of the stream-valley disaggregation.

The Allegany stream-valley aquifer had the greatest total withdrawals (39.4 Mgal/d); followed by the Ohio stream-valley aquifer (25.9 Mgal/d); the Monongahela stream-valley aquifers (3.35 Mgal/d); and the Beaver stream-valley aquifer (1.43 Mgal/d). Total withdrawals from the Delaware stream-valley aquifer and the Kiskiminetas stream-valley aquifer were both under 1.0 Mgal/d (0.10 and 0.01 Mgal/d, respectively). For all stream-valley aquifer withdrawals, the self-supplied industrial category had the greatest withdrawals (44.6 Mgal/d); followed by public supply (25.6 Mgal/d). No withdrawals from the irrigation category were assigned to a specific stream-valley aquifer.
